Founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad in Älmhult, a small town in the Swedish countryside, IKEA takes its name from his initials, the farm he grew up on and the village nearby. What started as a mail-order business selling pens and picture frames became the place most of us bought our first sofa, our first bookcase and the bowls we still use every day. We're choosy here. We pass over the obvious and pick the pieces that look far more considered than their price: solid pine and birch, rattan and paper shades, the archive reissues and the designer collaborations that sell out quickly. Good Swedish design, put next to the rest of your room and holding its own.
